The Decline of the Early Church

Modern Christians tend to have a "classicly romantic" view of the early church: it was time when professing Christians were completely devoted to their Lord, they faithfully served one another and they "believed the right things".

While these characteristics can be seen in the very early church, as it developed through that first generation real, substantial and devasting problems began to emerge as they became careless and indifferent. The pattern is essentially identical to OT Israel under Joshua: during his life, national Israel was basically faithful. But, after Joshua died it declined into the terrible and debased history recorded in the Book of Judges.

Sadly, the same pattern in seen in the NT church as it "matured"; the decline is still "alive and well" to this day.
